Miss Mai a love story Mr Lewis MacLeod 9781502708700 Books
Mr. MacLeod has crafted a funny, sad, insightful coming-of-age memoir that moves gracefully from the lusts of adolescence to the birth of love in a young adult. With self-effacing candor, he describes his journey from high school to university to Viet Nam and back with humor and pathos. The only combat in these pages is the combat of the mind and the heart as a young man faces his ignorance and prejudice and learns "to turn the map over and see things from the other side", finally challenging "all he knows that really ain't so." MacLeod's love of words and language shines through, from the awkward self-consciousness of the adolescent to the man's attempt to communicate what is truest in his heart. Ultimately, it is a book about integrity. Even reading it a second time, I wept. I can only hope that an enterprising screenwriter finds this manuscript and makes of it the film it deserves to be.Product details

Miss Mai a love story Mr Lewis MacLeod 9781502708700 Books Reviews
Excellent. I felt like I was right there with him.
best bokk in a long time.
Well written and something a guy of this generation can easily relate to.
This book mixes history with a love story where both parties had strong feelings for each other which resulted in a surprised ending. Read to find out.
This book starts slowly with highlights of the author's youth through various infatuations and a marriage. Then he gets drafted. What follows next is a sweet love story, unfulfilled, tender, beautiful and sad. Any reader can relate to a youthful love like that.

I read the reviews and thought I would download and read for myself. I was glad I did. It was an interesting book for me. The first half of the book covers the time in high school and college and post college, marriage and then drafted, boot camp, etc. The second had really gets into the essence of the book and introduces us to Miss Mai. The second half was of more interest to me. I would score the first half as about average a 3 star but the last half a 5 star (average 4 here). The second half was hard put down and moved quickly to conclusion....which I will not spoil here. It had much more "heart" and feeling and the author spun the tale so that I felt I was there.
Interesting story about the Viet Nam era from the perspective of a college aged and later male who got caught up in the war. It is a well-written and very readable story and could be autobiographical, although it was never pitched as such. The story follows the main character from puberty through his college years in the late 1960s, and is largely focused upon his relationshi8ps with women, from first love/sex, through love and marriage, and then to the war where he is smitten with forbidden love, in the person of Miss Mai. There is no actual depiction of the fighting in the story, since the main character is posted in a Headquarters company in Saigon, but it does give what I believe to be an accurate portrayal of that environment. Perhaps one of the reasons that I enjoyed the book is that, given different circumstances, it could have been about my own experiences.
